Posted Wednesday, August 20, 2025 6:00 am By SAMMY WAY Sumter Item archivist and historian Maya Anthony's quatrain describes individuals who, sadly, are quite rare to our experiences. Those who grace the lives of others by their love and sacrifice provide hope and visions of possibilities. One such inspirational man was retired Brig. Gen. Hugh McLaurin III. For them it is not about the fame, But lighting others' path, their aim They rise by lifting all in sight, A beacon in the darkest night. -Maya Anthony Many within the Sumter community remember the vast accomplishments of McLaurin, whose life was guided by his faith and love for his family, friends, the military and his home. McLaurin, born in Sumter, was the son of the late Hugh McFaddin McLaurin Jr. and Louise Nettles McLaurin. He grew up in the community of Wedgefield where, as a third-generation member of his family, he entered the peach business. He was a graduate of Edmunds High School and Clemson University, finishing in 1958 upon completion of his bachelor of science degree. He exemplified outstanding citizenship while in grade school; he was recognized with the Elks Youth Activities Leadership Award and was elected vice president of the South Carolina Junior Scholastic Press Association. McLaurin was a faithful, life-long member of Wedgefield Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and Sunday school teacher. He was often called upon by Sumter High School's Hands-on History program to lead tours of his church and was delighted to lecture or provide historical insight to assist students in their research. His wife, the former Virginia Anne Harvin, and his children are devoted to the church, and they continue to follow his example of kindness and service to all. In 1965, he joined Harvin Packing Co. as an assistant to its president, S.A. Harvin. He had also enlisted in the South Carolina National Guard, which became an integral part of his life. He entered the Guard at the age of 18 and served within the military for 33 years. He graduated from Palmetto Military Academy in 1957, seven years after the school became the South Carolina Army National Guard's officer candidate school at the National Guard Training Center at Fort Jackson. Because of his illustrious service over decades, McLaurin was inducted into the PMA Hall of Fame. Following 30 years as a field artilleryman, he assumed responsibilities as director of personnel for the South Carolina Army and Air National Guards. He took pride in the South Carolina Guard that consistently ranked as the best in the nation. He noted that of his many accomplishments, he was most proud of a 400-page book he wrote at the request of South Carolina Adjutant Gen. T. Eston Marchant. The title of the text was "History of the South Carolina Army National Guard and Militia." The publication covered the history of every Guard unit in every town within the state from 1670 through 1987. In addition to his military service, McLaurin was affiliated with Sumter Rotary Club, Society of the High Hills, Sumter Committee for Progress and served on the Sumter County Museum Board and the Thornwell Board. He served as director of Sumter Junior Chamber of Commerce and was a gifted orator and writer, narrating ETV Swamp Fox Documentary, and was a member of the Fortnightly Club, where he drafted multiple research papers that informed and inspired its membership. It was at this function that this writer developed great respect and admiration for McLaurin. He possessed an immense understanding of the history of the Sumter community and willingly served as a mentor for locals. His kindness, consideration and willingness to engage with everyone he encountered made him a friend to all. Gen. McLaurin will truly be missed. [1, 7, 8, 12] | |
