Born on Sept. 8, 1946, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Norman M. and Bernice Baker Newman. He was a member of Community Church. He was a farrier, a Greyhound Bus agent in Sumter, and a truck driver for Estes Freight Lines. Survivors include his wife of 50 years; two daughters, Jennifer McLeod of Pinewood and Leigh Mitchell (Leon) of Sumter; three grandchildren, Kelsey Newman, Matthew Bruce and Dylan McLeod; two great-grandchildren, Jackson McElveen and Ryder Bruce; and a sister, Louise Summerall of Florida. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Community Church with the Rev. Don Riner officiating. The family requests casual attire. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Community Church, 3590 Pinewood Road, Sumter, SC 29154. Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.
