| HIST | Moye (Mellette) Tillman, widow of Francis Cammer Tillman Sr. died Moye was the youngest of 13 children of the late William Wheeler Mellette and Elizabeth Jennings, in Sumter County. She was of Huguenot descent and was the ninth generation of Mellette’s, having arrived in Charles Town prior to 1670, to live in Charleston and Sumter, South Carolina. She was a graduate of Sumter High School, Sumter, South Carolina, Class of 1932 and the University of South Carolina in 1936 having received a BS degree in English, history and political science. She did her graduate work at Furman Universary having majored in Elementary Education and Psychology. She furthered her education at Charleston Southern University. She taught for two years in Orangeburg County Schools and 40 years in the Charleston County Coooper RIver District #4, at Chicora Elementary and Park Circle Elemtary (now Hursey Elementary). She was a charter member of Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary sorority for teachers. She was instrumental, with a group of teachers, in establishing the Cooper River Teacher’s Association and untimately became its president, and represented that group in San Francisco, California in 1953, Nashville, Tennessee, and Jackson, Mississippi. She was a member of Charleston County Teacher’s Association and served on many boards and ultimately becoming its president, having represented that group in New York City. She was appointed by all three Mayor’s and City Council of North Charleston and represented the citizens of North Charleston and this association in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Newark, New Jersey. She served on the Charleston-Dorchester County Mental Health Board for 25 years, appointed by the governor at the recommendation of the legislative delegation. She was in the pioneer class of the Master Gardner Program in 1980, under the late Barrett Lawimore, and was honored at the 25th Anniversary in 2005. She was of the Lutheran faith and was a charter member of Peace Lutheran Church. She is survived by three sons, Francis Cammer Tillman Jr., William Wheeler Tillman and Samuel Ellerbe Tillman and his wife, Sandy, all of North Charleston, four grandchildren and and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, seven sisters and five brothers. Services will be held at . Burial will be buried at Sumter Memorial Cemetery, Sumter, Sumter County, South Carolina. Her helper was trying to get her out of bed and she just keeled over and died. Moye Tillman Share Visit Guest Book Moye M. Tillman N. CHARLESTON - Moye M. Tillman, age 95, died on Monday morning, October 12. She was the widow of Francis "Frank" Cammer Tillman, Sr, who died in 1986. Moye died of natural causes after living a glorious and spirited life. She was residing in her home with her oldest son, Francis, at the time she died. A public school teacher for 42 consecutive years, she taught the third, fourth and fifth grades in North Charleston schools from 1940 through 1980. She taught at Chicora Graded Elementary from 1940 to 1959, Park Circle Elementary (now known as Doc Hursey Elementary) from 1959 to 1968, and AC Cochran Elementary from 1968 to 1980, after which she retired. Known affectionately by her sons and grandchildren as "GrandMoye", Moye was born in Sumter County, SC on September 6, 1914. She was the youngest and last survivor of 13 children. Instrumental in organizing Cooper River Classroom Teachers Association in North Charleston, she was elected their President sometime prior to 1955. In 1955 Moye was elected President of the Charleston County Education Association. A very active classroom school teacher leader, Moye attended national conventions in New York as President of the Charleston County Classroom Teachers, San Francisco as President of the Cooper River Classroom Teachers, St. Louis as President of the Elementary Teachers of South Carolina, a division of the South Carolina Education Association and Jackson, Mississippi, for a district meeting of the South Carolina Chapter of the National Education Association. Moye continuously kept up with the latest developments in teaching, attending leadership conferences in Tomassee, SC, in the mountains above Greenville, Sponsored by the SC Education Association. She was a charter member of Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Teachers Sorority, Charleston Chapter, and served as secretary of the North Charleston Business and Professional Women. After the incorporation of the City of North Charleston, Moye served faithfully on the Citizens Advisory Council for over a period of 15 years, having been appointed by all three mayors, Bourne, Kinard and Summey, with the concurrence of the different city council members. While a member of the CAC she served two terms as its President. Actively working for the CAC she was chosen by her fellow members as a delegate and attended conferences for the CAC in Cincinnati, OH, Newark, NJ, and Pittsburgh, PA. She also represented CAC of North Charleston at the national Convention of Municipalities. A 1936 graduate of the University of South Carolina, majoring in history, political science and English Literature, Moye also did graduate work at Furman University in elementary education. Much later in life she earned 30 credits in the English Department and the Early Childhood Education Department of the Charleston Southern University. When Clemson's Master Gardner program began, Moye was a member of the first (pioneer group) class, which started in Charleston, SC in 1980. Until her death she was the oldest member of the master Gardner's program in South Carolina. Advent Lutheran Church in North Charleston, SC, was her family's religious home for 22 years. Moye attended Advent's Bible Class for 15 years. When Peace Lutheran Church began Moye was charter member. Her love was the Charleston/Dorchester Mental Health Commission on which she served for over 20 consecutive years. Having been continuously appointed by the Charleston County Legislative Delegation, she served the longest tenure on this board of any other Commission member. Moye was the youngest of 13 children of Elizabeth Jennings and William Wheeler Mellette, a Sumter County family of Huguenot decent. She was a member of the First Families of SC. Amidst her professional duties and contributions to the community, she cared and loved her husband and their three sons, Francis, Wheeler and Sammy, guiding her children through to adulthood. All three sons now live in North Charleston. Moye loved politics and people. She was active in many political campaigns all of her life. She is survived by three sons, Francis, age 69, Wheeler, age 68 and Sammy, age 56, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
