Ryttenburg "Rit" Alston Jr. was born Aug. 3, 1939, in Sumter, a son of the late Ryttenburg Sr. and Janie Singleton Alston. He departed this life on Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Rit was reared in Sumter County, where he received his education at High Hills School. Rit later moved and spent many years in Steelton, Pa., Harrisburg, Pa., and New York. After relocating back to Sumter County, he was employed with Brown & Martin Construction Co., Shaw Air Force Base, William Landscaping and Avery Lumber Co., Sumter. At an early age, Rit attended High Hills Baptist Church. Rit never met a stranger in his life. He was a great conservationist and enjoyed making others laugh. He was a very strong-willed person. He enjoyed car rides and going fishing. He leaves to cherish his fond memories and witness his homegoing: one daughter, Monique Alston; one son, Ryttenburg "Pete" III (A. Frances) Alston of Montgomeryville, Md.; seven grandchildren, Treanna, Kendall, Cheyenne and Trinity Alston, Michael, Christy and Victoria Graham of Mississippi; five brothers, Jervia, Andrew and Samuel Carl, all of Dalzell, Nelson of Albright, Pa., and Samuel (Shirley) of Perth Amboy, N.J.; two sisters, Harriet of the home and Minnie L. (George Sr.) Thomas of Dalzell; one brother-in-law, William Prayleau of Temple Hill, Md.; three aunts, Mary S. Prioleau and Martha Prioleau of Dalzell and Albertha Singleton of Bronx, N.Y.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other relatives and caring friends, all of whom will miss him. Rit was preceded in death by one daughter, Valerie Graham; one sister, Ida M. Alston Prayleau; grandparents, Nelson and Rosa B. Singleton and Harriet Brown; two uncles; and five aunts. Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at High Hills Baptist Church with the pastor, the Rev. Dr. Ellie Palmer, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Willie Dennis, the Rev. Dr. D.L. Grant, the Rev. Randolph Greene and the Rev. Robert Duffie. The body will be placed in the church at noon. Interment will follow in the churchyard cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence, 6325 Catchall Road, Dalzell. James Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.
