Wilkie Sr. of Sumter celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on June 2, 2018. Their three children and their spouses are Joe T. Jr. and Diana Wilkie of Barno, Paul and Amy Wilkie of Sumter and the late Mathew Wilkie. The couple has eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Wilkie is the former Betty Galloway of Sumter. JOE T. WILKIE SR. and BETTY G. WILKIE Posted Saturday, February 19, 2022 6:00 am On the afternoon of Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2022, heaven welcomed 87-year-old Joe T. Wilkie Sr. home. His wife of 65 years, 83-year-old Betty G. Wilkie, joined him in paradise the following afternoon. The couple met, married and lived in Sumter for most of their lives. Joe worked at SIFCO, until its closure. Then he worked for the city of Sumter water department, until he retired. Betty was a retired cafeteria manager for Sumter County School District 17. They were both longtime members of Sumter Baptist Temple. Betty served as the church nursery manager for many years. They raised three sons together. Church functions, baseball, weekend fishing trips to Santee and hunting were major parts of their family life. Betty loved to cook and bake, and her delicious cakes were often in demand. Joe and Betty were both fans of Western movies, particularly John Wayne. They were known as "Nanny" and "Papa" to their eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. The sound of laughter and happy, squealing children filled their home during family get-togethers, birthdays and holidays. Joe was born on Nov. 22, 1934, in Sumter County, a son of the late George T. and Eva Shirer Wilkie. Betty was born on Nov. 15, 1938, in Sumter County, a daughter of the late Floto Sr. and Doris Rose Galloway. They are survived by two sons, Joe T. Wilkie Jr. (Wanda-Diana) and Paul A. Wilkie (Amy); eight grandchildren, Jennifer Wilkie (Chad), Stephanie Pirolo, "Tripp" Joe Wilkie III (Ashley), Matthew Wilkie (Amber), Ariel Floyd (Alex), Phillip Wilkie (Kelsey), Kerrie Joos (Michael) and Abby Deaton (Derrick); 11 great-grandchildren; a special great-aunt, Frances Green; and many nieces and nephews. Betty is also survived by a sister, Barbara Hudson; two brothers, Floto Galloway Jr. and Robert Galloway (Sharon). In addition to their parents, the couple was preceded in death by a son, Matthew J. Wilkie Sr. Joe was also preceded in death by one brother, John Wilkie; five sisters, Georgia Mahar, Ann Huggins, Mary Cave, Betty Jean Brown and Dorothy Mayeaux. Visitation will be held at 2 p.m. and the joint funeral service will begin at 3 p.m. on Sunday at Sumter Baptist Temple. The Rev. Eddie Richardson will be officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Summerton. The family will receive visitors at the home. Memorials may be made to Sumter Baptist Temple, 2295 Harper St., Sumter, SC 29153.
