Yates James Pigford “J.P.” Yates, 92, husband of Ernestine Barwick Yates, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2012, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Jan. 21, 1920, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Robert Vernon Yates Sr. and Lottie Pigford Yates of Sumter. He and his wife were longterm, independent-living residents of 15 years, and recently, assisted-living residents at Covenant Place in Sumter. Mr. Yates was a member of Grace Baptist Church and served in the Army during World War II. He returned to Sumter to work at Cities Supply Co. from 1945 until 1971. He became co-founder and president of his own water works supply company, Pyco Supply Co. in 1971 until 1984, at which time he sold his company and retired. Mr. Yates was a most caring and loving husband, father and grandfather. He was devoted to family first and instilled the love and respect for family in his children and grandchildren. His devotion for the people he loved, as well as friends, was an attribute to his unselfish and giving spirit and the way in which he led his life. We are most grateful and appreciative to his doctors and Visiting Angels’ caretakers for their compassion and care for our father in his failing health and to the Covenant Place skilled care workers in the last several months. Surviving are his beloved wife of 70 years, Ernestine Barwick Yates; three children, Dianne Jennings and husband, Harold, of North Carolina, Michael Yates and wife, Brenda, of Sumter and Elaine Yates Ardis of Sumter; six grandchildren, Denise Williams, Debra Teeters, Donna Garcia, Harold Jennings Jr., Kelly E. Ardis and Erin P. Yates; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews, whom he loved. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Kevin Ardis; and six sisters and one brother, Vernon “Skeet” Yates Jr., Lydia Mitchell, Sybil Kirby, Rose Tomlinson, Toni Davis, Virginia “Tootsie” Wise and Ethel Tisdale. Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with the Rev. Bennie Barwick and the Rev. Jimmy Holley officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.
