| HIST | of Sumter, South Carolina Rev. Emil C. Wittig The Rev. Emil C. Wittig, 84, widower of Alice J. Wittig, was called home to glory on Thursday, July 19, 2012. He went to sleep peacefully at his home and woke up in heaven, where he now lives with his Lord and Savior! Born Oct. 30, 1927, in Chicago, Ill., he was a son of Emil and Helen Eckstein Wittig. The Rev. Wittig attended Columbia Bible College in Columbia, now Columbia International University, graduating in 1952. It was there he met his future wife, Alice, and they were married July 28, 1950. They were blessed with more than 60 years together, until her death June 1, 2011. The Rev. Wittig served the Lord faithfully for 45 years as a pastor, first at Palatine Bible Church, Palatine, Ill., from 1952 to 1969. Upon moving to South Carolina in 1969, he served as pastor of Bible Fellowship Church, Sumter, from 1969 to 1982, and finally at Covenant Bible Church, Dalzell, from 1982 until his retirement in 1997. Looking forward to joining him in heaven are three sons, Steve Wittig and Donny Wittig, both of Sumter, and the Rev. Dave Wittig and his wife, Donna, of Greenwood; three sisters, Helen Morgan of Walnut Creek, Calif., Esther Johnson of Lafayette, Ind., and Lois Yates and her husband, Paul, of Orlando, Fla.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. The Rev. Wittig has joined his wife and parents in heaven as well as a sister who preceded him, Florence Brant. The family would like to express gratitude to his caregivers, Lisi Pearson, Artrelle Pearson, and Florence Williams, for their wonderful care these last few months, and to Debbie Dilella and the staff of Hospice Care of Tri-County for their excellent and compassionate care. A memorial service and celebration of the Rev. Wittig’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Westside Baptist Church, 554 Pinewood Road, Sumter, with the Rev. Dave Wittig officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at Westside Baptist Church just prior to the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Westside Baptist Church, 554 Pinewood Road, Sumter, SC 29154, or to Columbia International University, 7435 Monticello Road, Columbia, SC 29203.
