Wells, widow of Nathaniel Wells, died Monday, Dec. 15, 2008, at Long Island Jewish Hospital in New Hyde Park, N.Y. Born in Sumter County, she was the third of four children born to the late Sallie Ann Sanders Dinkins and Abraham Dinkins. She was educated at the historic Rafting Creek School, attended Lincoln High School and later completed her education in Richmond, Va. She was raised in the Rafting Creek Baptist Church, where she was active in Sunday school and the Baptist Young People's Union. After marriage, she joined St. Mark AME Church in East Elmhurst, N.Y., where she was a member of the Fellowship Circle. Later, after relocating to Sumter, she was an active member of Mount Pisgah AME Church, where she served in various capacities including the Stewardess Board. While residing in New York, she was employed for more than a decade at The Visiting Nurse Services, until her retirement. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Louise Spann and Fannie Nelson; and a brother, Isaac Dinkins. Surviving are her daughter, Brenda J. Wells-Arrington and son-in-law, William Arrington, of Laurelton, N.Y.; two grandsons, Kevin Christopher Wells-Arrington and Brendan William Wells-Arrington; nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Pisgah AME Church with the pastor, the Rev. M.C. Ragin, officiating. Interment will follow in Hillside Memorial Park. Mrs. Wells will be placed in the church for public viewing Saturday from 10 a.m. until the hour of service. The public may view Mrs. Wells from 1 to 8 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel.
