| HIST | of Sumter, South Carolina 2625 Carriage Drive, Sumter, South Carolina WILLIAM ARCHIE THOMPSON Posted Monday, January 27, 2025 5:09 pm Funeral services for William Archie Thompson, 83, who entered into rest on Jan. 27, 2025, will be conducted on Thursday afternoon, Jan. 30, 2025, at 2 p.m. from the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Ronald Allen Taffer officiating. Private interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2025, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Mr. Thompson was born in Sumter on Nov. 26, 1941, to the late Archie Edward and Ileen Dennis Thompson. He served his country in the United States Army as a Military Police Officer. For more than 40 years, Mr. Thompson was a manufacturing engineer with Sunbeam Corporation in Manning and Square D Company in Columbia. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Sumter where he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and a member of the adult choir. He was a member of American Legion Post 15 where he served for more than a decade as chaplain. Mr. Thompson loved woodworking, golf and his five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Caroline Thompson Thompson; daughters, Allison Thompson Taffer (Ron) and Caroline Thompson Thomas (John); grandchildren, Jessica Thomas Kamlet (Adam), Aaron Grant Taffer (Anna Kate), John Adam Taylor Jr. (Kimmy), Anna Caroline Taffer Bayne (Derek) and Daniel Henson Taffer (Madison); 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Doris Thompson Collins. He was preceded in death by brothers, Donald Thompson Sr. and Robert Thompson. Honorary pallbearers for the service are Mr. Thompson’s grandsons and nephews, Grant Taffer, Adam Taylor, Daniel Taffer, Donald Thompson and Wayne Thompson. The family would like to thank special friends Vicky Carty and Don and Ivy Smith, along with the staff of Linville Courts at the Cascades at Verdae for their friendship, love and compassionate care for Mr. Thompson.
