Like many other Methodist churches in South Carolina, the earliest records do not appear to be extant. The earliest known record book dates from 1853, a copy of which was supplied to your editor by SCMAR subscriber Dr. J. V. Burns of Spartanburg, South Carolina. These records were written in a volume with a printed title page: Roll Book, Sunday-School Superintendents, Class-Leaders, and Others, published by Lane & Scott in New York, 1850. The notations M, W, and S by the names in some of the lists appear to stand for married, widowed, and single. 1853 Class at Zoar 1 Female members 2 Mary Smith Senr M Died 28th Feb 1853 3 Jane Duncan S 4 Nelly Wilson M 5 Nancy Moore M 6 Mary Davis M 7 Margaret Garren M 8 Nancy Davis W Dead 9 Sally Davis S 10 Elender Mason M 11 Nancy Wood W Infirm 12 Nancy Ellis M 13 Rebecca Davis S 14 Jerusia Burns M 15 Jane Wheeler W 16 Nancy C.
