- John Freeman Miller lived with his grandparents, James and Elizabeth Miller, in the Pine Level community of Montgomery County. When his grandfather died he was sixteen, and he and his brothers Frank and Lee, Jr., assisted their Uncle Philip in his farm work. At the age of twenty-five, John married Laura Ann McElvin, the fifth of seven daughters, and ten children of Burrell B. and Emily Brunson McElvin. John Miller operated a farm near Ramer in close proximity to his brother, Franklin, who operated a farm. (Lee Jr., by this time had left home.) John F. Miller probably also operated a general store on his land, for the 1880 US Census for the county shows him as a planter and merchant. Mrs. Miller died in 1906. John lived on for twenty years until he died in 1926. They are both buried in the Ramer Cemetery at Ramer, a small town about twenty-five miles south of Montgomery. Note: When
the census was taken in June of 1880 Franklin Miller's son, Walter, age 2, was counted in his own home, as well as at the home of his Uncle John Freeman Miller. He was the same age as his first cousin, Ruffin Miller, age 2, and was apparently visiting him when he was counted twice.
