Virginia P. Matthews LAKE CITY - Every so often, the Lord allows a person to spend 91 years on His earth. Perhaps it's His way of ensuring the person has experienced all life has to offer and all God has provided, or perhaps it allows those in the person's life time to enjoy them. That was certainly the case with Virginia Powers Matthews, 91, a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who began enjoying her Eternal Life on December 16, 2013, as a result of old age. Virginia was born February 28, 1922, in Timmonsville, SC, to Willie Powers and Camilla Galloway Powers. She was one of seven children, the "youngest" in the family, a title she shared with her twin brother, the late Edgar Rae Powers of Timmonsville. They were often referred to as Sis and Son. As a high school student she played center forward for her basketball team, a skill she passed on to her children and great-grandchildren. She went on to meet and marry the late Marvin F. Matthews who ran a movie projector at a theater in Florence, SC, when they first met. Virginia had two daughters, Marie M. Livingston of Columbia, SC and Rebecca M. Baker, who preceded her in death. Virginia's spirit will live on in her grandchildren, Robin Southern, John Tate, and Krish Rescigno, and her great-grandchildren, Justin Southern (22), London Southern (17), Ryan Rescigno (13) and Ella Rescigno (11). She enjoyed watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's activities, and above all, she was proud of her family. She was a very giving person. She will be remembered by her "feistiness," her never-ending love of her family, her delicious dressing at Thanksgiving, and her love of yard work and ironing clothes at her home and her grandchildren's homes. She will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by her family. The family will greet visitors on Friday, December 20th from 10 am 11 am at Carolina Funeral Home, Scranton. A graveside service will follow at 11:30 am at Lake City Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorial donations to the Lighthouse Hospice Group, 110 Oak Park Drive, Unit C, Irmo, SC 29063. May we all be blessed with a long life of happiness and good health like Virginia. And may we all imagine what she is seeing as she walks those streets of gold this Christmas season in Heaven.
