| HIST | Dr. Allen P. Bruner’s former office building, now owned by First Presbyterian Church, was recently razed to make room for more parking for the church. Dr. Bruner was in general practrice at that location for nearly 45 years. The building was originally owned by Isaac Strauss, who was the father of Ilene Rubin. of Sumter, South Carolina DR. ALLAN PRESTON BRUNER III Posted Saturday, September 4, 2021 6:00 am Dr. Allan Preston Bruner III, 88, widower of Helen Banks Bruner, died on Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2021, at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital. He was born on Jan. 26, 1933, in Columbia, to Elsie Elaine Coffin Bruner, formerly of Prince Edward Island, Canada, and Capt. Allan Preston Bruner II, of Fort Motte. He is survived by his children, Kathryn "Trina" Stone (David) of Arlington, Texas, Stephen McKenzie Bruner of St. Matthews and Marian Burns (Charlie) of Sumter; a sister-in-law, Nancy Banks of Lexington; grandchildren, Sarah Bowers (Joel) of Columbia, Allan Stone (Nicole) of Long Beach, California, Preston Stone (Erin) of Aledo, Texas, Rowland Burns (Laura) of Anderson, Kathryn Stone of Arlington, Rebecca Jenkins (Blake) of Birmingham, Alabama, and Banks Burns (Kaylie) of Mount Pleasant; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his mother, father, wife and son, Allan Preston Bruner IV. Allan grew up in Columbia and attended Hand Middle School and Columbia High School through ninth grade. He finished high school at St. Matthews High School in 1950. He attended college at The Citadel and graduated in 1954. He earned a Doctor of Medicine from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1957. Allan married Helen Woodside Banks of St. Matthews in 1956. After completing a year-long internship at Columbia Hospital (Columbia) in 1957, they moved to Sumter, where he practiced family medicine for more than 40 years. In addition to his private practice, Allan was a member of the medical staff at Tuomey Hospital. He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. When off call, Allan enjoyed the outdoors. He and Helen were horse and cattle owners and spent all the time they could at the family farm in Calhoun County. If he was resting, he was reading. He enjoyed all educational material. The family sends sincere gratitude for the patient and dedicated care of the Morningside staff and the constant cards of encouragement and love from Aldersgate United Methodist Church and many friends.
