She was a past president of the Pilot Club and a member for 50 years. She was also a member of the Chamber of Commerce, a past president of the Merchants Association, and served as president of the Easter Seals Campaign in 1961. at death- she had 5 grandchildren and a great-grandchild While a student at the University of South Carolina she met and married her first husband and shortly thereafter moved with him to Sumter. She opened a ladies’ clothing store at 101 1/2 N. Main St. called RuVelle for Sanders and her sister-in-law. 25 years later she moved to the corner of Main and Canal Streets. occupation cont- shop which has been in operation for 35 years- which began in 1936- (RuVelle’s formal opening was 30 Mar 1962 at 202 N. Main St., Sumter, South Carolina) She was presented a plaque which reads as follows: “Ruth R. J. Sanders, for 35 years of unselfish service on Main Street.” Listed on the plaque were the names of her employes: Helen Terry, Florrie Reynolds, Dea Bertram, Alice Osborne, Betty Ardis, Grace Hodge and Betty McElveen. She was named “Woman of Year” by the Business and Professional Women’s Club in 1965. [3, 11, 12] |
