| HIST | from Charleston, South Carolina Laurel Jennings Dinkins, husband of Camilla Dinkins, and head of the Dinkins’ farming household in Sumter District, SC, died in 1859, only a year before South Carolina’s secession, leaving Camilla with her two oldest sons, Charles C., age 17, and Lewis B., age 15, to help her tend the Dinkins’ farm and her other four minor children. When the War came, her dutiful sons, Charles and Lewis, volunteered. She lost them both. Lewis died in the service of Co. C, 1st SC Artillery. Charles was killed in action in the Battle of Seven Pines, Virginia, Serving with Co. E, 6th SC Infantry Regiment. [2, 4] | |
