Hoefer COLUMBIA -- Elizabeth "Betty" Marshall Hoefer died peacefully Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, at her home, at the age of 88. Born June 12, 1923, in Macon, Ga., she was a daughter of Joel Jackson and Miriam Sadler Marshall. A lifelong resident of Columbia, she was educated in the Columbia city schools and was a member of the first graduating class of Dreher High School. She received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of South Carolina, where her favorite course was "I Want a Word," a vocabulary course taught by Professor Havilah Babcock. At Carolina, she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. After completing her undergraduate degree, she moved to New York City (against the advice of her father) and obtained a master of science degree from New York University. Following a brief career in retail merchandising in New York City and Atlanta, she returned to Columbia and married her husband of 47 years, Theodore Marion Hoefer, on Sept. 25, 1948. Together they had eight children and Mrs. Hoefer devoted her life to the rearing of her seven surviving children. With each of them, she shared many gifts including her love of literature, art, music, flowers, animals, and her home at Sullivan's Island, along with a strong sense of love and security that assured each of them that they could become anything in life that they wanted to become <0x2014> as long as they did their best. And she was not a mother just to her own children, but also to many other people who sought her out for her love, advice and compassion that she always freely shared. She was for many years an active member of First Presbyterian Church and was a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church at the time of her death. Mrs. Hoefer was active in the lives of both her family and community. In addition to her involvement with the many organizations and activities in which she encouraged her children to participate, she was also a member of the Junior League and a proud life member of the Carolina Alumni Association. She was also a member of Forest Lake Club, The Summit Club, The Camellia Ball, and the Quadrille, Flamenco and Tarantella dance clubs. At the time of her death, she was a member of the board of directors of Columbia Silica Sand Inc., a Lexington County business started by her husband and two of his siblings in 1948, which she joined in 1989. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Theodore Marion Hoefer; and infant daughter, Margaret Lindner Hoefer. She is survived by her seven children and their spouses, Joel Marshall Hoefer (Elizabeth) of Columbia, Theodore Marion Hoefer Jr. (Carol) of Crystal Lake, Ill., Anthony Dyer Hoefer (Nancy) of Sumter, Frederick A. Hoefer II (Tamara) of Florence, Elizabeth Hoefer Ward (Scott) of Atlanta, John Marion Sadler Hoefer (Ashley) of Columbia and Lucia Hoefer Leaman (Sam) of Greenwood; 18 grandchildren and their spouses, Dr. Anthony Dyer Hoefer Jr. (Kate) of Alexandria, Va., Francis Whitney Hoefer of Crystal Lake, Jessica Lauren Hoefer of Mount Pleasant, Paul Hamilton Hoefer of Columbia, Jori Hoefer Andler (David) of Baltimore, Charles Scott Ward Jr. of Atlanta, Elizabeth Hancock Ward of Atlanta, Elizabeth Hoefer Pietrusza (Travis) of Atlanta, Joseph Bashor Hoefer of Florence, Emily Seabrook Hoefer of Alexandria, Miriam Sadler Leaman of Greenwood, William Moore Hoefer of Columbia, Samuel Madden Leaman IV of Greenwood, Rebekah Candler Ward of Atlanta, Amanda Townsend Hoefer of Columbia, Theodore Hoefer Leaman of Greenwood, Rachel Lawrence Ward of Atlanta, and Jackson Marshall Leaman of Greenwood; her great-granddaughter, Cora Virginia Hoefer of Alexandria; and dozens of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, and cousins. She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Molly and George M. Floyd; her sister-in-law, Mrs. Carrington B. (Jewel) Hoefer of Columbia; and brothers-in-law, Frank P. Fletcher and Hugh F. Fenzel. She was also predeceased by two sisters, Miriam "Toots" Marshall Fenzel and Josie "Jodie" Marshall Fletcher. In her later years, she was lovingly cared for by not only her children, but also a group of devoted and compassionate caregivers, Peggy Nederheiser, Sharon Spivey, Linda Graham and Marie Minnick; her physician, Dr. James Herman; her nurse, Brenda Tietjen; her bookkeeper, Susan Houghtaling; and the Lutheran Hospice of South Carolina. Her family is greatly indebted to them all. Graveside service for Mrs. Hoefer will be held at 11 a.m. today at First Presbyterian churchyard. Visitation was held Monday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Eastminster Presbyterian Church, the First Presbyterian Churchyard Fund, the Carolina Children's Home or the Carolina Alumni Association.
