By DENNIS BRUNSON dennisb@theitem.com Prior to his senior year of playing football for Sumter High School, Jimmy Noonan had played linebacker for two seasons. The decision was made to move him from linebacker to fullback for the 1987 season. "I think (offensive coordinator) Mark Clifford said he had to have me at fullback," Noonan said. "Or maybe (defensive coordinator) Johnny Martin said I was too slow to play linebacker for him." Whatever the reason, Noonan became a Shrine Bowl performer on an SHS team that won the 4A Division I state title. Because of that and his success as a high school head coach, Noonan has been selected as part of the incoming class of the Sumter Sports Hall of Fame. Noonan will be inducted today along with Arland Compton Jr., the late Robbie Evans, Frank Galloway, Terry Kinard, Henry Marshall, Cleveland Pinkney, Tommy Player, Katrina Anderson Sacoco and the late Rudy Singleton Sr. "I'm entirely humbled to even be considered for this," said Noonan, who is currently the head coach at Wando High School in Mt. Pleasant. "I think of my teammates, some of whom are already in (the hall). I guess this shows that there is a place for role players as well." As a sophomore, Noonan was part of a team that went 5-5 in the regular season, but made a run to the state championship game. That set the stage for what was to come in two years. "We had that success, then the next year we lost to Summerville in the lower state championship game," Noonan said. "That just added gasoline to the fire for us. We were not going to be denied winning that state championship. "We had confidence; that's all we talked about, that we were going to win a state championship. My playing days at Sumter were very, very special." Noonan went to The Citadel to play football, but was limited by injuries. However, he still had the hunger for football though and decided he wanted to go into coaching. That caused him to change his major from engineering to education to give him the chance to get into coaching. Noonan has been a head coach for 14 years. He was at Spring Valley for eight years, spent one season at Wilson Hall and just completed his fifth season at Wando. He picked up his 100th career victory this season. "We've been able to do some good things over that time," he said. "We haven't won a state title, but we've played for two lower state titles and won six region titles." Noonan figures coaching had to be in his blood because his father, Bill, was the head coach at Sumter High. He also said his experience playing football in Sumter had an affect on him wanting to become a coach and help young men. "From youth football, to middle school football at Alice Drive with Rick Avins, to playing under Coach (Tom) Lewis at Sumter High and all of those coaches, it was a great experience," he said. "I think that moved me toward what I'm doing now." Jimmy Noonan comes to LMA after a storied career as both a player and coach in the area. Noonan was born and raised in Sumter, starring at Sumter High under head coach Tom Lewis. He led the Gamecocks to the 1987 SCHSL 4A State Championship and played in the Shrine Bowl before signing to play at The Citadel. After beginning his coaching career as a graduate assistant at The Citadel, Noonan entered the high school ranks in 1993 at Spring Valley. He eventually served as the program’s offensive coordinator before taking over as the head coach at age 29. After 14 years at Spring Valley, he came home to Sumter to guide the program at Wilson Hall. He then spent 13 years at Wando before coaching at both Georgetown and Lucy Beckham. Coach Noonan was an NFL National Coach of the Year finalist for the Seattle Seahawks after being nominated by former player Michael Boulware, a Carolina Panthers Coach of the Year finalist, 4A Lower state Coach of the Year twice, the Palmetto Sports Outreach Coach of the Year twice, Region Coach of the Year six times. Coach Noonan is affiliated with the AFCA and has been the Executive Director of the SC Football Coaches Association since 2021. Noonan and his wife, Anne have four children, Mairin (27), Ashlin (25), Kellan (24), and Ryann (20). He is excited to bring a new era of leaderships and success to the Swampcats. Allen Kirby will be taking the lead as Headmaster for Laurence Manning, taking over for Tripp Boykin, who announced his decision to step down at the end of the year earlier this month. Kirby is well known in the Clarendon community. He is currently in his 20th year of education. He is currently the principal of Walker Gamble Elementary in New Zion, where he will finish out the 2024-2025 school year before taking the lead role at LMA. Kirby earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education at Francis Marion University and a master’s in education from Cambridge College. He also earned a degree of Education Specialist in Leadership from Coastal Carolina University. Kirby started his career at Walker Gamble, teaching second and third grade for eight years. He then transitioned to being the assistant principal at Johnsonville Middle School for three years. For the past nine years, Kirby was able to return home as the principal for Walker Gamble Elementary. Under his leadership, Walker Gamble Elementary has been named a Palmetto’s Finest School and a National ESEA Distinguished School. The school has also been featured in a book and numerous case studies shared around the world because of the Collective Leadership model that has been implemented. They partnered with the South Carolina State Department of Education and Mira Education (formerly CTQ) to develop the framework that is now used around the state, as well. Kirby is married to Abbie Kirby and they have two children, Cal (8) and Caroline (5). He is looking forward to his role at LMA and excited to become part of the Swampcat family.
