Moved to Dinkins Cemetery on Loretto Drive of Sumter, South Carolina He was raised by “Aunt Sally” who married Benjamin Franklin “Frank” Burkett Retired Co-op Manager Dies Robert Brownfield Dinkins Sr., 74, of 2801 Loretto Drive, former general manager of the Black River Electric Cooperative, died early today at Tuomey Hospital. Mr. Dinkins was born in Sumter County, a son of the late Robert and Mattie Doby Dinkins. He was a member and former deacon of the First Baptist Church, where he served as director of the Adult IV Sunday School Department and treasurer of the Baraca Bible Class for more than 10 years. Mr. Dinkins graduated from Draughons Business College in Columbia in 1925. He was a retired utility executive having been general manager of the Black River Electric Cooperative for 32 years, a charter member of the Central Electric Power Cooperative, Inc., and was instrumental in its concept and organization. He served as its first and only secretary and treasurer until his retirement in 1971, and was awarded a distinguished service award for his service to the cooperative. Mr. Dinkins had extensive farming and real estate interests in Sumter County, was a member of the Sumter Kiwanis Club for 25 years having served on the board of directors and many committees, an honorary life member of the Sumter-Columbia Hunting Club and was a member of the Sumter Executive Club. Surviving are his wife, Loretto Phifer Dinkins of the home; four sons, Robert B. Dinkins Jr., Charles William Dinkins and Stephen Lillington Dinkins all of Sumter and the Rev. David Hastings Dinkins of Walterboro; a brother, William Dinkins of Sumter and 11 grandchildren. Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Kirk L. Smith. Burial will be in the Tirzah Presbyterian Church Cemetery at Dalzell. Serving as active pallbearers will be William Dinkins Jr., Landon H. Dinkins, Robert Ross Dinkins, Arthur James, Dr. Allie Phifer and H.C. McLaurin. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be members of the Baraca Bible Class and members of the board of deacons of First Baptist Church and members of the Kiwanis Club of Sumter. The family will be at the home, 2801 Loretto Drive, and requests that memorials be made to the Building Fund of First Baptist Church. Bradham-Griffin Funeral Home is in charge. [1, 10, 11, 12] | |
