He enjoyed helping people with their yards and maintenance needs. NEW ZION- A wave, a smile, a helping hand and a willingness to share are what made Allen Thomas Coker, 61, “a truly good person with a good heart,” his sister said Monday afternoon. • “Allen was on his golf cart when he got killed,” Betty Jane Geddings said Monday. “He died happy. We all, family and friends, agreed. That was his life.” • Coker was driving his golf cart north on Pudding Swamp Road about 12:55 p.m. Friday, when he disregarded a stop sign and drove into the path of Loretta Hampton, 62, of Mayesville, who was driving a 2005 Mitsubishi southbound on Old Manning Road, according to Cpl. Bryan McDougald of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. • “Hampton was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured,” McDougald said. “Coker was airlifted from the scene and died at Palmetto Richland on Nov. 17 at 6:40 p.m.” • Clarendon County Coroner Hayes F. Samuels Jr. said the cause of death was from the multiple injuries he received in the accident. • Geddings said her brother knew just about everyone in their community. • “His project this past summer was garden redistribution,” Geddings said with a small laugh. “He’d see a neighbor with too much of one thing and he’d pick it and share it with neighbors who had too much of something else.” • Her brother was a lot of fun, she said. • “He touched everyone around him,” Geddings said. “He was good at heart.” • Coker was living with his sister when he died. • “He lived with mom until she died,” Geddings said. “Really they both lived with me and when she died he continued to live with me, but after a while he wanted to go home and spend some time there.” • The accident occurred while Coker was en route between his two homes. • Funeral services for Coker will be held at 11 a.m. today at Floyd Funeral Home Chapel, 136 E. Main St., Olanta, with burial in the Gibbons Family Cemetery. [2, 3] |
