As of 29 Oct 2023 I am leaving Deborah Lydia Bethea as the daughter of John “Virginia” (1700 - 1799) and Mary Pearce (1700 - 1757).
I am moving her from Philip Bethea and Absale Parker back to John “Virgina” Bethea and Mary Pearce.
Paperwork from William “BIll” Hatchell gives the following information. Wife’s notes- Spouse was Jehu (John) Lowry, Marion Distict, South Carolina; some doubt to maiden name (could be Wood). If Bethea, she was probably a daughter of either Virginia John Bethea b. bef 1705 or his brother Tristram Bethea b. 1714. As told by Lenward Hutchinson, “Jerry” (Jehu) Lowry married Jane Bethea, dau. of Phillip Bethea and Absala Parker. This acount appears however to be confused and not correct at least by first name. The account also states that Lowry had sons, all killed in the war.
Thank you, Jackie, very much. Concerning Jehu John Lowry's wife, everything I have seen says she was Lydia Bethea and Deborah Lydia Bethea (1737-1801), daughter of John "Virginia" (1700 -1799) and Mary Pearce (1700-1757) Bethea. Jehu (1748-1800) appears to have been the son of Robert (1730-1800) and Judith May (1743-1828) Lowry. This likely matches up with what you have found.
I still don’t completely understand if she is in the right place. She seems to be Lydia Jane Bethea in some places and then in the Hatchell Folder it says that she is Debora Parker, daughter of Philip Bethea and Absale Parker. Philip is the son of John Bethea who came to America in 1700. Will I ever find out for sure? If she is a Parker, did Absale have her without marring Philip. She is also listed as being a wife of John “Buck Swamp John” Bethea. Is there another Absale Parker? I am going to leave her here until I know different. jkh
From France in the late 1700’s came John Bethea. Had two sons, John Jr. and Phillip. Phillip married Abselle Parker and acquired about 1800 acreas of land and settled on the Cape Fear River at Wilmington, North Carolina, then later came to Dillon or Latta, South Carolina. Phillip and Abselle had one daughter named Deborah who married Jerry Lowery and moved to Willow Creek, at present the old Jeff Fryer place. etc. etc. [4, 5, 7, 8] |
