| HIST | The Progenitor The first record of him being in Robeson County, North Carolina, is from 1729 to 1808. The Cheraw Indians came to Drowning Creek in the summer of 1737, but were not using surnames. Charles was a member of the Long Swamp Indian Community of the 1700’s and endured for two centuries as a predominately Indian settlement (Prospect). Out of this community came many of the Indian leaders in education for Indian people in the 20th Century. Members of the earliest documented community were Charles Oxendine, William Morgan, Ismael Chavous, John Liggett, John Brown, Jabob Alford, Edmund Revel, William Locklear, Joseph Lockler and Thomas Johnston. Charles Oxendine is the progenitor of the Oxendines in Robeson County, North Carolina. There are no other racial people known as Oxendine in modern Robeson County, they are all Indians. He was granted his Land Grant in 1768. He was listed in Captain Ard’s District as owning 150 acres in the 1784 Bladen County Tax List. [1, 2] | |
