Fincher Grady Lamar Fincher, 91, husband of Edna Webb Fincher, died Sunday, May 15, 2011, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Silas Jasper and Lillian Smith Fincher. Mr. Fincher was a member of Concord Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder, former clerk of session, and teacher of the men's Sunday school class. He was a member of the men of the church and was moderator of the Harmony Presbytery in 1984. He graduated form Sherwood High School in 1939 and Spartanburg Junior College (then TII). He also graduated from Clemson University with an Artium Baccalaureatus degree and master's degree in vocational agriculture. He taught vocational agriculture for 27 years in Sumter School District 2 and retired from District 2 as director of vocational education after 37 years in the district. Mr. Fincher served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II with nine months in Panama and 26 months in the South Pacific. He made Master Mason in the Olanta Lodge and became a charter member of Fidelity Lodge No. 394 in Turbeville. He served as master of both lodges and was appointed district deputy Grand Master of the 26th Masonic District. He was a member of the Sumter York Rite Bodies, and had served as presiding officer for all three bodies. He was a Knight Mason, a member of the Palmetto York Rite College and received the Order of the Purple Cross in 1992. He was a member of the Red Cross of Constantine and the Sumter Council No. 188 Allied Masonic Degrees, the Societas Rosicruciana in Civitatibus Foederatis, and the Masonic Research Society. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, a life member of Knight Templar Eye Foundation, the Omar Shrine and other state and national appendant bodies. Mr. Fincher was an avid outdoorsman and gardener. He was a life member of the Sportsman's Hunting Club, a member of the Scape Ore and Concord Hunting Clubs, a member of the American Rose Society and served as past president of the Pee Dee Rose Society. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Virginia Evans (DeLeon) of Sumter, Lynn Crenshaw (David) of Pendleton and Celeste Blackmon (Lee) of Sumter; five grandchildren, Janice Warren (Lee), Dee Evans (Michelle), Kevin Evans (Shannon), Jennifer Crenshaw and Ben Crenshaw; a step-grandchild, Hal Blackmon (Laura); seven great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Fincher; and four sisters, Gladys Stafford, Mary Player, Evelyn Fincher and Lorena Lynch. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. James Braswell officiating. Burial will be in Concord Presbyterian Church cemetery. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home.
