Private, Company E (Civil War)
He enlisted at age 28 on 20 Mar 1862 at Minott’s Bluff, Charleston District, South Carolina. His service record presents only that he died on 3 August 1862. One reference presents that “H. Hatchell” died of disease at Charleston District, South Carolina, and is buried at Charleston in Magnolia Cemetery. (Broken Fortunes, Kirkland, Page 153); (Roll of the Dead South Carolina Troops Confederate States Service, Rivers, SCDA&H). He left a wife, Harriett A. Cole Hatchell, and four children - E. S. (daughter), Frances Fannie Susannah, Isaac Cole, and Thomas Joseph Calhoun Hatchell (Ancestors and Related Families of Kevin L. Privette, Privette, AWT). Private Hatchell had six brothers of military service age. John Pilkington Hatchell, Morris W. Hatchell, and James Lark Hatchell served with Hampton in Co. E, 3rd Artillery Battalion and survived - John until 1876, Morris until 1884 and James until 1900. Elias W. Hatchell died before the War in 1858 or 1859, leaving his wife, Margaret, a widow in 1860 (South Carolina 1860 Census, Marion District, Page 33). William Randolph Hatchell, born in 1813, and Benjamin Hatchell, born in 1817, could not be positively identified in a Confederate regiment (Confederate State Roster-South Carolina, Hewett). They were the brothers of Eliza, Deborah, Mary Ann, and Huldah P., and all were the children of John and Huldah Pilkington Hatchell of Marion District, South Carolina (Rising Family Gaffney, Sc. Rising, AWT). Secession, sovereignty and self-determination were natural, inherent birthrights to the Hatchell family, won for them by their Revolutionary War “rebel” ancestors. Private Hatchell’s grandfather, Drura Pilkington, served in the 2nd Virginia Continental Line (Historical Register of Virginians in the Revolution, Gwathney). His great-grandfather, John Lowry, served in the SC militia after the fall of Charleston on 12 May 1780 (Roster of SC Patriots in the American Revolution, Moss, Page 584); (Ancestors and Related Families of Kevin L.
