| HIST | 910 Reaves St., Sumter, South Carolina Date Published: July 25, 2008 HAZEL SINGLETON Jr. Hazel Singleton Jr., 70, husband of Lou Bertha Gregg Singleton, died July 22, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born May 9, 1938, in Sumter, he was a son of Bertha Mae Wilkes Singleton and the late Hazel Singleton Sr. Mr. Singleton attended the public schools of Sumter County. At an early age, he distinguished himself as a Christian and joined St. Mark United Methodist Church. He later joined Salem Missionary Baptist Church and served with the brotherhood ministry. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Mr. Singleton was employed with JC Penney for 43 years, retiring in 2001. Survivors include his wife, Lou Bertha G. Singleton; mother, Bertha M. Singleton of Sumter; three daughters, Rosa Lee (Eddie) Jackson, Yvette (Aaron) Barnett and Beverly (John) Davis; a son, Alfred (Gloria) Ross; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; three sisters, Shirley Blanding of Brooklyn, N.Y., Deloris Singleton of Sumter and Ruby Singleton Blakeney of Annapolis, Md.; three brothers, Willie O. (Jeanette) Singleton of Sumter, James E. (Dorothy) Singleton of Queens, N.Y., and Clarence Singleton of Midlothian, Va.; two brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Sadie B. Hunt, and a nephew, Earl Blanding Jr. Public viewing will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Salem Missionary Baptist Church, Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. N. Lamonte Newsome, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Walker Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at noon Saturday. The family will receive friends at the residence, 910 Reaves St., Sumter, SC 29150. Job's Mortuary Inc., 312 S.
