| HIST | Posted on Tue, Jul. 29, 2008 Howell Lester Barden Sr. IRMO — Howell Lester Barden Sr. beloved brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend left his daughter’s home in Irmo, SC, for the Promised Land July 26, 2008. The family will receive guests at Ingram Funeral Home in Cumming, GA, Tuesday, July 29, 2008, from 3:00 p.m. through 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Antioch Christian Church, Wednesday, July 30, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Ken May officiating. After the church service, family and friends will gather at 1:30 p.m. in Westview Cemetery for the interment. Howell Barden was born August 4, 1920, in Carnesville, GA, the third child and first son of McNeace and Bettie Wood Barden. The family moved to the Oakland City area of Atlanta in 1921. After graduating from Tech High in the Class of 1938, he worked construction in the military buildup that preceded World War II as a master plumber at Fort Stewart, GA, and other military bases in the Southeast. Howell joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served proudly aboard the USS Tabberer DE 418 in the Asia-Pacific War Theater as a machinist mate second class. The Tabberer and its crew received the first Navy Unit Commendation for the rescue of fifty-five men who survived the sinking of Destroyers USS Hood and USS Hull during the Western Pacific typhoon of December 18, 1944. Howell received two Bronze Stars, the Philippine Liberation Star and the Victory Medal. Upon returning to Atlanta after the war, he operated his father’s plumbing business, West End Plumbing, and his brother Braxton Barden, currently of Hampton, GA, joined him in the business which became Barden & Barden Plumbing. Howell was a charter member of Southwest Christian Church where he served as deacon. He attended Gateway Baptist Church when in South Carolina and Antioch Christian Church when in Georgia. He was a 32nd degree Mason and member of Scottish Rite Shrine. Howell was a fun-loving man who took great pleasure in seeing his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Howell was preceded in death by his brother, Mack N. Barden Jr. of Plant City, FL. He is survived by his two sisters, Woody Swanson of Chicago, and Maxie Faulkner of Huntsville; brother and sister-in-law, Braxton and Marion Barden of Hampton; nine children and their spouses, Howell and Lane Barden, Jr. of Cumming, Cheryl and Gary Wigley of Gainesville, Steve and Nancy Barden of Hoschton, Alan and Carolyn Barden of Max, ND, Douglas and Jill Barden of Ponte Vedra, FL, Terrell and Nancy Barden of Canton, Eddie and Lisa Barden of Canton, Timothy and Angela Barden of Canton, and Trellise and Randy Faile of Irmo, SC; 30 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren. Rest in peace Howell Barden - we love you, we will miss you and always remember your patient gentle manner. Your legacy will endure generations of our family. The family sincerely appreciates the tender care provided by the staff of Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia as well as the cards and letters received.
