Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 31, at Chappells Baptist Church in Chappells, SC, with Rev. James Rodgers and Rev. David McCarthy officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home in Newberry and other times at the home of his son, Bill (651 Brushy Fork Road, Saluda). Memorials may be made to Chappells Baptist Church, 1454 S.C. Highway 39, Chappells, SC 29037, or to Chappells Volunteer Fire Department, 3218 S.C. Highway 39, Chappells, SC 29037. Buddy was born October 15, 1919, in Peak, South Carolina. He was the son of the late William Elbert Spearman and the late Katie Coker Betts Spearman. He retired in 1984 as plant manager of Duke Power’s Buzzard Roost Generating Station on Lake Greenwood, after 44 years with the company. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater in Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 543rd Engineer and Shore Regiment where he assisted in the liberation of New Guinea and the Philippines and participated in numerous amphibious landings and was among the first Allied troops to arrive in Japan. He was a founding member of the Chappells Volunteer Fire Department and served as chief from its founding until his retirement in 1984. He was an active member of the Newberry County Fireman’s Association and the Newberry County Development Board. He was a lifelong member of Chappells Baptist Church where he served on the Board of Deacons, the Building Committee, and as a Sunday School teacher. Buddy was a pilot who enjoyed flying his Aerocoupe and an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, hiking, fishing and rock collecting. However, his greatest love was his wife of 61 years, Marion Faye Reese Spearman of the home; his two sons and daughters-in-law, William Elbert “Bill” (Molly Mitchell) Spearman III of Saluda and Lewis Benjamin (Sharon Bridges) Spearman of North; and his four grandchildren, Mitchell, Katie, Barrett and Alissa. Surviving him are his siblings, Katie Mildred Spearman Long of Saluda and Wayne Coker Spearman of Greenwood. He was preceded in death by his brother, Louis Francis Spearman of Ninety-Six, and his grandson, John Franklin Spearman. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. [1] | |
