| HIST | JAMES EDWIN MATHIS SR. Posted Friday, October 31, 2025 10:57 am James “Jimmy” Edwin Mathis Sr., 75, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2025, at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital. Born Sept. 19, 1950, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Len Benjamin Mathis Sr. and Mary Inez Cubbage Mathis. Mr. Mathis worked as a store manager for several grocery retailers. He worked with A&P and Ingles at Wesmark Plaza and also with Food Lion across the Southeast region. He taught his son to work in these stores and was known as a tough but fun boss. He built a kennel and bred Dobermans for a while. He loved to play, watch and teach basketball. He rooted for the South Carolina Gamecocks and spent many Sundays watching the Dallas Cowboys. Survivors include one son, James E. Mathis Jr. (Wendy); a grandson, Sean-Luke Mathis; two granddaughters, Cassia Linda Mathis Taylor and Calista Ann Mathis Matthews; three great-grandchildren, Grizzley Matthews, Coyote Matthews and Asen Taylor; a sister, Dorothy “Dotty” Lyles (Dan); three nieces, Tami Griffin, Keleigh Corbett (Carl) and Paige Stokes (Danny); one nephew, Chuck Van Patten; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, L. Benjamin “Benny” Mathis Jr.; a grandson, James Austin Mathis; a niece, Heather Lyles; and two nephews, Mark Lyles and Terry Griffin. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, 2025, at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home. A time of remembrance and sharing will begin at 3 p.m. Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements. [1] | |
