Born in Sumter on July 16, 1937, he was the son of the late Lonnie Cullen Newman Sr. and Frances Pollard Newman of Sumter. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Grupp Newman; two daughters, Pamela Newman Hitchcock and Heather Newman Kuhl (Daniel) of Orlando; two grandsons, Alex Hitchcock (Cassie) and Kevin Hitchcock; one great-grandson, Anthony Hitchcock; and one brother, Al Newman (Lucia) of Sumter. Cullen was a 1955 graduate of Edmunds High School in Sumter and attended Ringling School of the Arts in Sarasota, Florida. He was a retired artist and photographer. Cullen was a 23-year heart transplant survivor and spent much of his time mentoring other transplant recipients. A memorial service was held on Nov. 22 at Newcomer Funeral Home in Orlando.
