L'Artigue Fishburne
L'Artigue Fishburne ROCK HILL - Mrs. L'Artigue Fishburne passed away Friday, August 3, 2012 at Westminster Towers where she had been a resident for 18 years. A memorial service will be held at The Episcopal Church of Our Saviour at 1:00 P.M., August 16, 2012, with The Reverend Janice Chalaron officiating. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall in celebration of L'Artigue's 100 years. Born on August 16, 1912, she was a native of Columbia, S.C. Mrs. Fishburne was the daughter of the late Emily Pinckney and Harry Hammond Griffin, MD and the widow of Robert Purdy Fishburne. She attended Winthrop College and was a 1933 graduate of The University of South Carolina. Mrs. Fishburne continued her education with post graduate studies at Tulane University. She worked as a social worker for the Department of Social Services and later specialized in adoption placements. A member of The Episcopal Church of Our Saviour, Mrs. Fishburne was very active in both her church and community. She was a member of the National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in the State of South Carolina as well as a former member of the Junior League of Spartanburg. She was a charter member of Pi Beta Phi sorority at the University of South Carolina. Surviving are her son, Dr. Robert Purdy Fishburne, Jr. and wife, Katherine of Arlington, VA; her daughter, Emily F. Ballard and husband, Edward of Rock Hill; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Ballard Townsend and husband, Frank of Aiken, SC and Julia Ballard Dressler and husband, Philip of Fort Mill, SC; and 7 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Fishburne was preceded in death by her sister, Katherine Griffin Simons of Columbia. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to The Episcopal Church of Our Saviour, 144 Caldwell Street, Rock Hill, SC 29730 or to Westminster Towers Endowment Fund, 1330 India Hook Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732.
