| HIST | 773-8949 of Sumter, South Carolina African American Civil War Soldiers from Sumter County is topic of Sumter County Genealogical Society meeting on Feb. 19 Posted Thursday, February 15, 2024 6:00 am STAFF REPORT Austin China will speak on African American Civil War Soldiers from Sumter County at the February meeting of the Sumter County Genealogical Society. China will discuss both pre- and post-war genealogy of African Americans serving in the Union Army in the United States Colored Troop 104th Infantry regiment, all of whom were enslaved on plantations across Sumter County. During the Occupation of Potter's Raid, the men were recruited to join the Union Army and were trained in Beaufort and stationed in the Lowcountry. At the end of their service, the men returned to Sumter County, where many were active members in the community. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19, in the fellowship hall of Swan Lake Presbyterian Church, 912 Haynsworth St. Refreshments will follow China's presentation. The society meets monthly from September through May. Visitors are welcome to attend, and admission is free to the public. Interested persons can join the society. Membership includes four newsletters during the year and free use of the Sumter County Genealogical Society Research Center. Annual dues are $30 for an individual membership and $35 for a family.
