They say Mary Ann Miles was a Confederate spy. On one mission out side of Columbia SC, Mary Ann was shot by a Yankee solider... The story goes she stuffed a silk scarf in the wound and road all the way back home to Lexington SC on her horse. Thomas Humphrey Marks is the son of Dr Frederick H. Marks and Ann unknown. of Columbia SC. Dr. Frederick H. Marks b.1793 Charleston SC born to Jews parents he was converted to Christianity by his mammy along with his brother Dr.Elias Marks. Dr. Frederick H. Marks parents are Humphrey Marks and Frances unknown both came from England to Charleston SC. Humphrey Marks born in England abt. 1760 b. Sept, 15, 1838... He was the son of Jewish immigrants with the given name of ( Mordecai ) Humphrey married Frances Unknown abt. 1787 not sure of France's nationality but she would have been born around 1762... On the death certificate of a son Elias Marks it documents that she was from London England. Humphrey and Frances Marks came to Charleston SC in Nov, of 1783... The Marks family were members of the original Beth Elohim Synagogue in Charleston SC. The Marks family are included in Americans of Jews Descent : First American Jewish Families ( 1654- 1977 ) By Rabbi Malcom H. Stern. Humphrey Marks owned 640 acers of Land on little Stephens creek in Charleston SC dated March 27, 1785. The Humphrey Marks family owned a shop on the corner of King and George streets on March 12, 1798. Humphrey also owned a house on the corner of King and John streets ( three story House ,front of house facing King ) By 1828 Humphrey and Frances had moved to Columbia SC... They lived in a house on Richland Street that extended to Assembly street. This Richland Street property is now the location of the Columbia City Hall and adjoining parking lot. Humphrey and Frances also owned Marks' Porter House and relish House on Richland Street, across the street from the Richland Masonic Lodge # 39..........The Marks house and Business was burned to the ground by Gen.W.T. Sherman and his troops on February 16. 1865.. The Marks family are listed as original members of the Hebrew Benevolent Society in Columbia SC and as well in Charleston SC. He later became Principal and owner of the South Carolina Female Collegiate Institute, at Brhamville SC out side of Columbia SC. Dr. Elias Marks first married Jane Barham of New York ..... They had four children together. Jane Barham past away giving birth to their fourth child. Dr. Elias Marks remarried Julia Pierpont Warne of New Haven Connecticut. One of their daughters Edwina Pierpont Marks help organized the Mount Vernon Preservation Society and worked to restore Mount Vernon and register it as a national monument. 3.
