China Norman Obadiah China, husband of Reatha Ingram China, was born on Oct. 21, 1947, in Sumter, to the late Robert Lee Sr. and Thelma Franklin China. He departed this life on Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at Sumter Valley Health and Rehabilitation Facility. At an early age, he attended Beulah AME Church and later became a member of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church. His work life included employment with South Carolina National Bank, Federal Land Bank, Sumter County and the Sumter County Parks and Recreation Department as the rural league sports director. He established the Unity Fest, now known as "Festival on the Avenue." Norman received numerous plaques, awards and recognition for community service. He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving and devoted wife, Reatha "Ree;" one son, Brian (Lakeya) Ingram; five grandchildren; two sisters, Bessie (the Rev. Joshua) Dupree and Gwendolyn China, all of Sumter; four brothers, Gerald Allen (Dale) China of Atlanta, Georgia, the Rev. Robert L. (Gail) China Jr., Hugh Bernard (Kathy) China and Austin Dexter China, all of Sumter; four aunts, Mattie White of Brooklyn, New York, Sallie Ward of Clearwater, Florida, Hilda Smith of Columbia and Amelia Franklin of Sumter; one uncle, Joe Louis (Laura) China of Miami, Florida; three sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members. Public viewing will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary. The body will be placed in the church at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday for viewing until the hour of service. Funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, 803 S. Harvin St., Sumter, with Pastor Marion H. Newton officiating. Burial will be held on Monday at Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia. The family is receiving friends at 216 S. Washington St., Sumter. Job's Mortuary Inc., 312 S.
