| HIST | Jan L. Warner COLUMBIA — Jan L. Warner, age 67, beloved husband of Vicki Shuford Warner, died on Tuesday, October 27, 2009, at his residence. He was born May 9, 1942, in Dunkirk, NY, but raised in Sumter, SC. He left this earth October 27, 2009. Jan was renowned for his innovative legal skills; however, his family remembers him as a caring, giving man with great wisdom. Jan’s family was always his priority, and he showed it with his unwavering love and commitment to them. Jan graduated from Edmunds High School in Sumter in 1960. He was nominated to attend the United States Air Force Academy, where he played football. Jan then received his A.B. and J.D. degrees from the University of South Carolina and earned his Master’s of Legal Letters (L.L.M.) from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a Certified Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, the American Bar Association, the South Carolina Bar Association, and the American Judicature Society, among other legal organizations. In addition, he was an adjunct professor in U.S.C.’s Department of Neuropsychology. Jan was the co-author of two nationally-syndicated columns, Flying Solo and NextSteps, via the United Media Syndicate. His works were published in the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, N.Y. Post, L.A. Times, etc. He was also the co-author of the recently published book “Next Steps: A Practical Guide to Planning for the Best Half of Your Life.” Jan was predeceased by his father, Warner T. Warner, and survived by his beloved wife, Vicki Shuford Warner; by his mother, Naomi Warner; by five children, Paul Manville (Mary Catherine), Monty Warner, Mark Manville, Brandon Warner and Carrie Warner; a brother, Edwin (Marilyn) and a sister, Bonnie (Sid); two grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth and Annabelle; and by numerous nieces and nephews. The Warner family wishes to personally thank Leland McElveen, M.D., Kim DeWitt, Nanci Koon and the S.C.O.A. staff, as well as Kim Eaker and the staff at Palmetto Baptist Hospice. The family asks that all well-wishers remember Jan as a strong, kind, generous human being with unyielding love for his family, his work and his country. A memorial service celebrating Jan’s life will be held on Thursday, October 29, 2009, at 6:00 p.m. at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rehoboth Baptist Church, 1408 Old Wallow Gregg Road, Florence, SC 29506 or to Temple Sinai Cemetery Fund, 13 Church Street, Sumter, SC 29150 or to a charity of one’s choice.
