Date Published: December 1, 2009 Sumter man, 30, dies after Clarendon wreck By GINA VASSELLI Item Staff Writer gvasselli@theitem.com A Sumter man died Sunday morning after a car wreck in Clarendon County left him with critical injuries. Brent Hodge, 30, of 18 Lawton Circle, died at 11:35 a.m. Sunday at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia from multiple injuries, fractures and several head injuries from the collision, which happened Saturday, officials said. South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Josef Robinson said Hodge was driving his four-door 2002 Nissan along Stone Road, about six miles north of Manning, when he ran off the right shoulder of the road. The car ran into a ditch, struck a tree and overturned. Hodge was ejected from the car. The crash happened around 12:53 p.m., and Hodge was airlifted to Palmetto Health Richland, where he later died from the injuries he suffered in the crash. Paulette Christmas, Hodge's great aunt, said he was on the way to watch the Carolina-Clemson football game at his father's house when the wreck happened. "He was a good family person," Christmas said. Christmas said Hodge was her great-nephew, "But I just called him my nephew." She said Hodge was not the type to "sit over in the corner and be a stick in the mud," and that he was a "people person." She recalled Christmas last year, when the family performed "The 12 Days of Christmas." "He just was participating and laughing and just having such a good time with the family," she said. Hodge, who worked at a gun manufacturing plant in Columbia, leaves behind his wife of several years, Casey, and a young daughter. He was a longtime area resident. Christmas said Hodge and other members family enjoyed a nice Thanksgiving dinner together on Thursday. "It was kind of a knockout on Saturday," Christmas said. "I just feel so for the family."
