| HIST | of Lancaster, South Carolina Barbara Gaskins Platt NORTHEAST COLUMBIA - Mrs. Barbara G. Platt, wife of the Rev. Dr. John V. Platt, passed away Saturday, April 17, 2010. She is with her Lord whom she loved and served with devotion. Mrs. Platt was born November 16, 1943 in the Pamplico community to the late Herman T. Gaskins and the late Thelma Belflower Gaskins. She grew up on her parents' farm, worshiped at Mt. Zion Baptist Church and graduated from Hannah High School where, during her senior year, she scored the winning basketball shot and celebrated with her team the state championship title, Division C. Mrs. Platt attended Coker College for two years before marrying and, after working in the Dalzell public library and in the Laurens school system while rearing two sons, pursued studies in pharmacy in Spartanburg and Charleston. She graduated from M.U.S.C. and enjoyed a 29-year career with Eckerd/Rite-Aid in Lancaster and Columbia. She served her customers with compassion and dedication - many of them stopped in specifically when they spotted her 1974 orange Volkswagen Super Beetle parked in the lot. She was also a dedicated minister's wife and served in many capacities in the churches and associations where her husband was called. She was active in W.M.U., prayer groups, choir, literacy and children's ministries. Her missions work led her to join groups serving in West Virginia, Honduras, the Amazon and in southern Brazil. In addition to her work and life in ministry, Barbara enjoyed homemaking. She was an accomplished cook and gracious hostess for guests, but above all she enjoyed being outdoors. She harvested many delicious fruits and vegetables from gardens she worked and took great pride in keeping a neat and manicured yard. She also loved walking, bicycling, swimming and hiking - especially at favorite vacation spots like Kiawah, Lake Keowee and the Carolina mountains. Surviving are her husband John, sons Todd of Monroe, NC, and Bryan of Louisville, KY; brother and sister-in-law Watson L. and Inez A. Gaskins of Pamplico; nieces Donna G. Black (Robert), Wanda G. Hardee (Ricky), Tina G. Outlaw (John), grand-nephews D.J. Lee, Stephen Lee, Jeremy Davis, Adrian Davis, William Outlaw and grand-niece Mary Catherine Outlaw; aunts Blanche G. Hutchinson, Alvena E. Belflower, Eloise B. McDaniel and an uncle, Cherry Byrd. She was preceded in death by her oldest brother, C. Lugene Gaskins. The Platt family is very grateful for all the nurses and doctors who cared for Barbara during her illness - including Dr. Neil Christiansen, Dr. Prateek Mendiratta and the staff at South Carolina Oncology Associates and Kim Eaker and Pam Dixon of Hospice. The family is also grateful for all the help and support provided by neighbors, friends at Spring Valley Baptist Church and associates at Rite-Aid. Funeral service will be held 2 æp.m. Tuesday, April 20, at Spring Valley Baptist Church and will be led by the Rev. Dr. Robert Winburn, assisted by Rev. Joe Dempsey. Burial will follow at 5:30 p.m. in Bamberg Memory Gardens, Hwy. 78, in Bamberg County, SC.
