He was also a member and past president of the Sumter Kiwanis Club and the Sumter Citadel Club. Mr. Pate was a WWII Vet and served as Sumter Co Auditor from 1959 to 1971. He was a member of the county board of commissioners from 1953 to 1959 and was a member of the board of education from 1949 to 1953. He won the top award in balance farming in Sumter County in 1951.
