| HIST | Lois McLeod Delores “Lois” Haithcock McLeod, 62, wife of Floyd McLeod, died Saturday, March 1, 2014, at her home. Born in Darlington, she was a daughter of the late Fred Hallman and Mary Anderson Hallman. Lois was a waitress at Sumter Cut Rate’s fountain for more than 40 years. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Donna Faye Velez and Jessica McCoy (Travis), both of Sumter; four grandsons, Kent Hass, Nicolas Hass, Logan Velez and Cooper McCoy; two step-children, Erin Burrows (Clint) and Jason McLeod (Christina), both of Sumter; three step-grandchildren, Rhett Burrows, Gabriel McLeod and Ethan McLeod; three brothers, Donnie Hallman, Charles Hallman (Susan) and Leslie Hallman, all of Sumter; and four sisters, Lisa Miles, Dianne Floyd (Roland) and Tricia Turner (Mitch), all of Sumter, and Mary Pope of Florence. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Jesse Lee “J.L.” Haithcock, and three brothers, Ray Hallman, Fred Hallman and Pinckney Hallman. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mitch Towery officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Floyd, Casey Osteen, Clint Burrows, Jason McLeod, Kent Hass and Nicolas Hass. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Monday at the funeral home prior to the service and other times at the home of her daughter, 731 Baldwin Drive. A message from Lois – “I would like to send out a special thanks to Sumter Cut Rate as well as all of my wonderful customers. I miss you and send my love. I just want you all to know how much it lifted my heart to see everyone come out and support me on ‘Lois Day.’ Thank you for having such a servant’s heart that day. Much love and blessings, Lois McLeod.” The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff of Amedisys Hospice for the compassionate care they provided. Lois McLeod, a waitress who works at the diner, was readmitted to the hospital Tuesday, and the money raised from breakfasts and lunches bought during the day Tuesday will be used to help pay for her medical expenses. Lois McLeod is the quintessential diner waitress, the Flo of Sumter Cut Rate's lunch counter. Walk in for the first time and, if you're lucky enough to have Lois serve you, you'll soon be her Little Buddy, Sugar, Sweetie, Girlfriend or Darlin'. Your beverage glass will never be dry, and you'll never go without whatever you need to make your meal complete, whether it be food or advice. On Tuesday, Cut Rate was overflowing with customers there not just to eat, but to donate to McLeod's medical expenses. She has some serious medical issues and was, in fact, being readmitted to the hospital Tuesday, while customers ate and paid for their meals knowing that every dollar spent at the lunch counter would be used for the expenses of their favorite server. All the booths and the three lunch counters were full, and people stood in the aisles waiting for a seat; those who couldn't wait dropped bills into a donation jar at the check out register. Servers said the lunchroom had been "slammed all day." Nobody complained of having to wait. Tuomey Healthcare System's public relations department sat together at a long table set up just for the occasion. Each wore a name tag reading "Shugga," "Darlin'" or "Honey Bun," in honor of McLeod. Large booths were crammed with police officers and city employees, all enjoying special dishes renamed for the pet names Lois uses for her customers. Spaghetti was The Little Buddy, Sweetie was potato soup with a ham and cheese, while the Girlfriend was chicken bog. With $1,500 in cash sales, an additional $2,800 in credit cards and the donation jar, the total amount raised is expected to be about $5,000, she said. "There was a lot of money in the tip jar," Foxworth said. "She's loved around here." Lois McLeod has worked for the Sumter lunch counter since the 1970s and has recently come down with some serious health concerns. During Tuesday's rush, classic dishes were called by her characteristic nicknames such as "Little Buddy" and "Sweetie." While no other events are currently planned, Foxworth did say a few area churches have offered to help and the donation jar will remain out at Sumter Cut Rate.
