James Vann, Jr of Sampson Co., NC and Fayetteville, Cumberland Co., NC >No record found so far to indicate this James Vann was a Capt. One of his younger daughters told this but unknown if it originated with her or if there was some other information regarding that status. If you have one, please share. He was referred to as James Vann, Jr to differentiate him from an I older relative James Vann, who was called James Vann, Sr. James Vann, Jr died in 1890 in Fayetteville, Cumberland Co, NC and was buried in Cross Creek Cemetery #2. His son, Enoch James Vann also died in 1890 and was buried there also. >James Vann married 1. Mary Robinson, d/o George Washington Robinson and Margaret Matthis of Sampson Co., NC abt 1847. Mary died August 1862 in Sampson Co., NC 2. Mary Jane Butler on Oct. 8, 1866 in Sampson Co., NC. At the time, she had been widowed twice and was listed as Mary Tatum, not of Butler. > Mary Jane Butler married 1. James R. Tatum d. July 1863 during Civil War (Williamsport). She had two children James R Tatum and Ida Lorraine Tatum at the time of his death. James (the son) apparently did not survive to adulthood because he stops being mentioned in he the guardianship records within two or three years of his father's death. Ida's appointed guardian is George Washington Robinson, who remains such until his death in 1880, when his sons assumed the responsibility of the accounting. 2. William Robinson Tatum of Sampson County, NC. In September. 1865, Mary Jane Butler Tatum has a son, Julius Lilly Tatum. In November 1865, Robinson Tatum dies. George Washington Robinson was executor/administrator of the estate of Robinson Tatum. Guardian for Julius L. Tatum and the minor children of Robinson Tatum (through first wife) was L Highsmith, brother-in-law (married to Julius' older half sister). **side note-- Robinson Tatum was the uncle of James Vann, Jr (mother of James was younger half sister of Robinson Tatum) 3. Mary Jane Butler Tatum Tatum married James Vann on October 8, 1866 in Sampson Co., NC. By 1870 census, they were living in Fayetteville, Cumberland County, NC in the Cross Creek area. They remained there until the death of James Vann in 1890. After that time, until her death in 1920, Mary J Butler Vann traveled between Greeneville, Greene County, TN where her daughter, Lula traveled with her until her marriage to Alonzo Jacob Bird when she settled in Greeneville. Mary Vann continued to travel, visiting her sons, Clarence and Troy Vann in addition to her daughter, Lula and stepson, Festus Augustus Vann, who was the first nown of our Vanns to relocate to Greene Co. Son, Edwin H Vann settled there briefly before relocating to Harris County, TX. She died January 1920 in Fayetteville, Cumberland Co., NC and was buried at Cross Creek Cemetery #2.
