Active pallbearers will be his nephews: John Thomas Gressette, William Nathan Gressette Jr., Tatum Wannamaker Gressette Jr., Lawrence Marion Gressette Jr., Furman Reeves Gressette Jr., Thomas Parker Gressette, James Hill Gressette Jr., Clarence Bates Gressette and John Gressette Felder. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Bobby Gressette Sunday School class. The family will receive friends at his home place on West Bridge St. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice, or to the Children's Fund of the First Baptist Church of St. Matthews. Dukes-Harley Funeral Home is in charge. Mr. Gressette died Friday. Born July 18, 1910 in St. Matthews, he was the son of the late John Thomas Gressette and Rosa Wannamaker Gressette. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret Rickenbacker Gressette. Mr. Gressette graduated from the University of South Carolina, where he served as Captain of the Gamecocks for the 1930 football season. He was recognized by the All American Board of Football, and named an All State End his senior year. In addition to his gridiron accomplishments, he served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Student Body, Vice President of the German Club, and was a member of Pi Kappa Phi, Omicron Delta Kappa, Block "C", Cotillion Club, and Blue Key. Following college, Mrs. Gressette taught and coached at Richmond Academy in Augusta for six years. Returning to St. Matthews, Mr. Gressette organized and operated Gressette Motor Co., a Ford dealership, and also farmed. He was active in civic and community affairs by serving as Mayor of St. Matthews for two terms, and was elected as Chairman of the Calhoun County School Board. He was a Rotarian and served as President of the Rotary Club of St. Matthews. Mr. Gressette, along with his brothers, organized the South Carolina Senior Golf Circuit in his retirement years. Mr. Gressette was an active member of the First Baptist Church of St. Matthews, serving as deacon, Finance Committee Chairman, and Sunday School teacher. Surviving are his children, Emily G. Rucker, Elizabeth Gressette, Ashby Gressette; grandchildren, Doug Rucker, Randy Rucker, Maggi Rucker.
