| HIST | Phillip Michael Grier Phillip Michael Grier LORTON, VA. - Phillip Michael Grier died on August 10, 2012, in Virginia, three weeks shy of his 71st birthday. Mike was a beloved friend, brother and uncle who affected all who knew him in ways both profound and subtle. Throughout his life he was a fascinating kaleidoscope of a man, wonderfully generous and lovably eccentric. He possessed a wide ranging breadth of intellectual ability and interests, and was expert in his own inimitable fashion in matters as diverse as entomology and music, genealogy and antiques, literature and the law. Diverse, eclectic and witty, with a remarkably creative and inventive mind, he was a notable raconteur of tales and could expound hundreds of anecdotes which might actually contain an occasional kernel of truth. Mike was an inspirational figure for those of us who were fortunate enough to share our lives with him. He served as an able mentor, wise counselor, avid teacher, and visionary guide. His spirit and gifts to us will remain, though his loss in many ways is as palpable as was his presence. Mike Grier was born on August 31, 1941, in Quitman, Georgia, the son of Dale Parrish Grier and Phillip Moore Grier. He graduated from Valdosta, Georgia, High School in 1959 as student body president, and from Furman University (with a BA degree) in Greenville, South Carolina, in 1963, also as student body president. Upon graduation from Furman, he served a stint in the United States Army (1963-66) as an intelligence officer, primarily stationed at Fort Bragg. He then attended law school at the University of South Carolina, graduation with a JD degree in 1969. Mike practiced law with the Haynesworth law firm in Greenville for one year, then returned to USC where he held several positions in administration including staff counsel, ombudsman for the university, assistant to the president and General Counsel from 1972-1979. H was the first attorney hired as full-time legal counsel at USC. Mike left USC in 1979 to become executive director for the National Association of College and University Attorneys, a position he held until his retirement in 1996, at which time he received the NACUA Distinguished Service Award. After his retirement he lived in Lorton, Virginia, until the time of his death. Mr. Grier was preceded in death by his parents, Phil and Dale, and his stepfather, Walter Cottingham. He is survived by his dear friend Aali Naser of Lorton, and Mike's brothers and sisters and their families: Mary Lynne and Gordy Powers of Palmetto, Florida; Walt and Karen Cottingham of Zirconia, North Carolina; John Cottingham of Del Mar, California. Mike had six nephews and two nieces (and ten grandnephews and nieces) whose exploits and achievements constantly nourished and enriched his life. A memorial service will be held at the Daniel Chapel on the campus of Furman University on September 7, from 1:00-3:00 PM. Memorial contributions may be sent to any of the following: the Cosmos Club Foundation (cosmosclubfoundation.org/); the Early County Historical Society (P.O. Box 564, Blakely, GA 31723); the National Association of College and University Attorneys (nacua.org); the St. Nicholas Society of the City of New York (saintnicholassociety.org). Condolences may be mailed to Aali Naser at 7754 Grandwind Dr., Lorton, VA 22079, or to the respective family members at their homes. A memorial guest book has been opened at murphyfuneralhomes.com.
