Gary's Florist, 674 Bultman Drive, open 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday; 8:30 to 11 a.m. on Saturday; open later on holidays. (803) 775-7768 or 775-7769 Name, hometown, occupation: Gary Duby. I was born and have lived in Sumter all of my life. Owner of Gary's Florist LLC. What's your business, when did it start and what got you into it? Gary's Florist opened Feb. 1, 1995, by myself and my wife, Ann. I had worked in the floral industry since the age of 16 and had wanted to start my own business for many years, so when the opportunity presented itself where we were able to combine my skills as a designer and my wife's skills as a bookkeeper we decided to wait no longer. What's your long term goal? To continue to serve our customers with all their floral needs, whether in weddings, anniversaries, birthdays or the more difficult times of illness or grief. What's your favorite aspect of running the business? All the many wonderful people we meet and get to know - watching some of them grow from children to become husbands and wives to fathers and mothers. What's your business philosophy? We strive to provide the best service possible. If we wouldn't send it to our loved ones, it wouldn't leave the shop. How many employees and their functions? We currently have myself and my wife - we design all of the arrangements. Cheryll (Gibbs) is our full-time delivery person and my father, Bob, delivers for us part-time. We do, however, have a lot of family who help us out during the holidays and we're grateful for that. What was your first job and how did it lead to your current job? I have worked in some aspect of the floral business since the age of 16 and after one or two other jobs, I have always gone back to the artistic work of floral design. What's something most people don't know about your job? Every single arrangement is custom made by our own hands. It's hard work and long hours sometimes but to know you created something special for someone is much like an artist with a brush. What do you do in your free time? We enjoy going to the lake and spending time with family and friends. If you won the lottery would you stay in business? Yes. I may take more than two days off for vacation, but I have always loved what I do. - Joe Perry Posted in Local news, News on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 Is this Gary Allen Duby who married Deborah Thigpen on 6 Aug 1982 in Sumter County, South Carolina [3, 5] | |
