BY IVY MOORE ivym@theitem.com When the new reality show titled "Your Own Show: Oprah's Search for the Next TV Star" debuts tonight at 9 on OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network, Sumterites will have two good reasons to watch: One contestant, Zach Anner, has Sumter connections, and co-host (with Carson Kressley) Nancy Humphries O'Dell was born here in 1966. Anner's grandfather, Gordon Hodge, was born in Sumter and lives here now, after spending much of his adulthood in Buffalo, N.Y., where Anner was born to Hodge's daughter, Susan Hodge Anner. Hodge moved back to Sumter seven years ago, he said. The 26-year-old Zach Anner lives in Austin, Texas, where he's a comedian, actor and writer. Like thousands of others, he submitted an application and a video to Winfrey, who is looking for a talented individual to host his or her own TV show on her network that debuted Saturday. Anner's proposal for a travel show to be titled "Rollin' Around the World" drew the attention of Winfrey and her staff, as well as millions of votes from the public. Born with cerebral palsy, which he refers to as "the sexiest of the palsies," Anner, who uses a wheelchair, displayed a great sense of humor in the video and a quick wit when interviewed live by Winfrey. When she asked if doing a travel show might be too strenuous for him, Anner quickly said "No," adding, "Basically, I'm sitting down all day." "I want to do a travel show for people who never travel," he said, noting that he knows something will always go wrong when traveling, and he wants to demonstrate how to cope with and overcome any difficulties, even from a wheelchair. Hodge said he'll be watching the debut of "Your Own Show: Oprah's Search for the Next TV Star" with Susan Anner, who flew in from Buffalo on Thursday night. She teaches writing and theater at the University of Buffalo and is an award-winning playwright whose works have been produced at a variety of theaters and other venues. "I think that's where Zach got his talent and interest in performing," his grandfather said. Hodge said he's not surprised that his grandson was one of 10 finalists selected from more than 15,000 entrants who submitted videos outlining their program ideas. "He never surprises me," Hodge said. "Even though he's never walked and has to boost himself into his wheelchair, nothing stops him. He's traveled to England, France and Italy; he's been skydiving. He moved to Austin (Texas) for college, and he has a show there." Hodge hasn't seen Anner's audition tape and admitted he doesn't know what his chances are at winning, since "I don't know what they're looking for," but added, "He's miraculous. He has a good presence. "I get a little choked up when I talk about him. We're so proud." The other Sumter connection, O'Dell is the longtime host of the entertainment-news TV show "Access Hollywood" and will take over co-hosting duties on "Entertainment Tonight" upon Mary Hart's retirement this year. O'Dell, whose family moved to Myrtle Beach when she was 6 months old, has been nominated for eight Emmy Awards, winning one. A summa cum laude graduate of Clemson University, she is a frequent guest star on TV shows, has hosted the Miss USA pageant numerous times - she was Miss South Carolina 1987 - and serves on the boards of many charitable organizations, most notably the Muscular Dystrophy Association. O'Dell can frequently be seen hosting red carpet portions of Hollywood award shows, as well. Anner's audition tape for OWN can be seen online above.
