JOE PERRY jperry@theitem.com Leadership, team building, grant writing and community improvement - all in the name of promoting good health and improving quality of life - were the focus of a recent program that paired Sumter County Active Lifestyles with the University of South Carolina. Linda Pekuri, executive director of Active Lifestyles, explained that USC's Prevention Research Center partnered with her group and developed the Community Advocacy and Leadership Program, through a grant from the Centers for Disease Control. Members from the Broad Street Community Faith Warriors, Rembert Area Community Coalition, and the Salterstown Community Center participated in the year-long program and graduated on Jan. 15. "We're just trying to give community leaders the skills they need so they can advocate, so their communities can be healthy and opportunities for physical activity will exist," explained Ericka Burroughs, of USC's Prevention Research Center, and the project evaluator. "So that's our main goal - to have people healthy and in an active environment." Jacquelyn Sessions said the Salterstown group is in process of buying playground equipment with grant money, which should be installed by Memorial Day. Lottie Spencer said the Broad Street group didn't secure a federal grant for the VIM, or Volunteers in Mission Park, but the city of Sumter came through with grant money to help improve that area on Wallace Street. "People that didn't use to go there feel safe now because they don't have to worry about the gangs and the drugs like they used to," Spencer said. "So it's a beautiful park now ... I am happy to be a part of that and that community has changed a lot," especially the perceptions of what can be accomplished. Juanita Britton of Rembert said land was secured for playground equipment, which was just installed. "Cold as it is, they're out there playing, so it's been very beneficial," she said, noting that the Sumter County Sheriff's Office is supposed to install some basketball goals. "We're looking at continuing on and making that a park for the community." Participants will receive a year of technical assistance, said Sylvia Flint, a community development specialist from USC's PRC. Pekuri said the monthly workshop topics during the leadership program also included effective communication, community assessment, media and policy advocacy, cultural sensitivity, meeting facilitation, strategic planning and community resources and technology. For more information, contact Flint at (803) 774-6169 or Pekuri at (803) 774-3861. Reach Joe Perry at (803) 774-1272. Posted in News, Local news on Sunday, January 23, 2011 [1, 4] | |
