Powell, 90, husband of Margaret Amerson Powell, died on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017, at his home. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Frank and the late Annie Mae Lide Powell. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of World War II. Mr. Powell taught electronics at Lower Richland High School and retired from Richland County School District One after 32 years of service. Survivors include his wife of 69 years; one son, Steven H. Powell (Jan) of Oswego; one daughter, Fran P. MacLauchlan (H.R.) of Rock Hill; six grandchildren, Margaret Buckaloo (Mike), Susan Brown (Paul), Amanda Pierce (Richard), William Powell, Elizabeth Barber (Aaron) and Kathleen Powell; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his brother, J.W. "Jay" Powell. A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Sumter Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home.
