Posted in Obituaries on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 Man dies while trying to save grandmother from fire BY R. DARREN PRICE dprice@theitem.com A man and his grandmother died after a fire at their home on Boulevard Road early this morning. Dustan Newman, 27, and his grandmother, 80-year-old Maggie Baker Lambert both died in a fire about 2 a.m., according to Sumter Fire Capt. Brian Horton. Horton said that firefighters responded to the home after someone driving past the home in the 1300 block of Boulevard Road spotted the blaze. When they arrived, the fire had consumed the entire two-story home. The bodies of Newman and Baker were both found in a bedroom doorway. Firefighters were on the scene for more than eight hours. Horton said that the cause of the fire is undetermined at this time, but foul play is not suspected. Newman and Baker's bodies have been sent to Newberry for autopsy, Horton said. For more information, see Sunday's edition of The Item. Posted in Local news, News on Saturday, October 29, 2011 Man dies trying to save grandmother Buddy Davis looks at the remains of the Newman home after a fire Saturday morning. Davis and dozens of family and friends were at the home to support Yvonne and Tommy Newman, who lost their son, Dustan, and mother, Maggie Lambert, in the blaze. By R. DARREN PRICE dprice@theitem.com Dustan Newman died trying to save his grandmother's life. The two-story Newman family home of more than 27 years was engulfed in flames early Saturday. The air was heavy with smoke. Newman, 27, grabbed his grandmother, 80-year-old Maggie Baker Lambert, from her room and carried her. Then, firefighters think, he made his way toward his first-floor bedroom where there was an exterior door. But, they didn't make it out. Firefighters arrived at the 1345 Boulevard Road home shortly after 2 a.m. and found their bodies next to each other near the door. Sumter Fire Capt. Brian Horton said the department doesn't ed next week, but he is confident Newman was trying to save Lambert. "We told the family that," he said. "It appeared that he was trying to carry her out." Horton said someone driving by the home saw the fire and called 911 about 2 a.m. The home, part of a horse farm, sits off Boulevard Road, so the fire could have been hard to see, Horton said. When firefighters arrived on scene a few minutes later, the fire was what Horton called "fully-involved," and the second story was beginning to collapse. Firefighters stayed until 10 a.m. fighting the blaze, but the house was destroyed. Horton said a cause for the fire is not Horton said the smoke was heavy inside the home - so heavy that Newman's lungs could have been filled with carbon monoxide and starved of oxygen before he made it out the back door. "Most cases like that, you're dealing with smoke that gets so thick people get disoriented," he said. "Your brain starts reacting differently when it gets below certain oxygen levels." Newman's mother and father, Yvonne and Tommy Newman, also of the home, were in their RV on their way to a short vacation in North Carolina. Yvonne said she last talked to her son and mother about 11:30 p.m. Friday to say goodnight. She said when they heard the home was on fire, they turned around and got back as quickly as they could. Yvonne said it was devastating to hear that she lost two of the people closest to her. "I've cried all I can cry," she said Saturday afternoon. "I've lost two of the most important people in my life." Yvonne and Tommy parked their RV in a large field on their property Saturday when they got back. Rebar, charred wood and ash are all that remains of their home; the fire burned so hot that it bubbled up the protective film on the windshield of Tommy's classic Ford Mustang. They weren't alone in their grief, though. Dozens of friends and families came out to support them. Brandon Johnson, one of Dustan's cousins and Lambert's grandson, was among the dozens of friends and family there. He came to the home as soon as he heard. As of 3 p.m. Saturday, he hadn't gone home. "There's no words to describe this," he said. "Me and Dusty, we grew up together." Robin Johnson married into the family and was also at the home Saturday afternoon. She said members of the family are all very close and support one another in times of need. "I'm heartbroken for Yvonne and Tommy," she said. "We love them." Yvonne said that at first, she wasn't sure she would want so many family members at the home. But, she said, she's glad that so many came to show their support. "It's hard, but I Yvonne said she and Tommy are both in shock over the fire. She said she wasn't even sure how to act. But, she was glad her son's last act was a heroic one. "My son died saving my mother's life," she said. "I'm so proud of him." Posted in Local news, News on Sunday, October 30, 2011 [1, 2, 4] | |
