Alice was born October 11, 1921, in Kingstree, S.C., to Roland Corneilus Mitchum and Ethel Leigh Rowell Mitchum. She graduated from St. Stephens High and attended the University of S.C. She and Gene were married June 21, 1941. They moved to Columbia after WW II and remained here. She was an active member of Shandon United Methodist Church and the Wesley Fellowship Class for 59 years. She was also a member of the Louise Munnerlyn Circle and the Shandon United Methodist Women. Alice served as secretary of Crayton School, Shandon United Methodist Church and also as a teller for First National Bank. She served for 17 years as secretary of the Education Committee in the South Carolina House of Representatives and retired from the University of South Carolina School of Education in 1986. She was known fondly as 'Big Alice' to many U.S.C. students and football players who walked through her door and into her kitchen. She was a huge Gamecock fan and rarely missed a game, either in person or on the radio or TV. She and Gene were devoted parents and grandparents and shared the love of gardening. They so generously gifted many friends with summer vegetables out of their garden. She is survived by her husband, Eugene C. Garvin; her daughter, Alice Gene (Genie) Garvin Sullivan of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; and her son, Eugene C. (Tommy) Garvin Jr. (Martha Butler) of Columbia. Alice was the adoring grandmother of nine and great-grandmother of 15. She is also survived by her two sisters, Mary Sue Mitchum Grunsky (Frank Joseph) of Columbia, and Ethel Maria Gwin of St. Stephens, S.C. Alice was predeceased by her three brothers, Rowell Corneilus Mitchum, Roland Colson Mitchum and Lawrence O'Neil Mitchum. The family would like to express their gratitude to her loving and dedicated caregivers, Sandra Jackson, Carmella Washington, Vanessa Thompson, Carol Gowens and Tasha Gamble. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 4, 2011, at Shandon United Methodist Church. A reception will follow in the Wesley Fellowship Hall. A private burial will be held in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
