Is Sarah his full or half sister? jkh DR. HARRY L. HARVIN Jr. DURHAM, N.C. – Dr. Harry Lewis Harvin Jr., 85, died Thursday, March 5, 2009. He was a resident of Croasdaile Village in Durham. The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham with the Rev. David Harvin and the Rev. Steve Hickle officiating. Visitation will be an hour before and after the service. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Sumter Cemetery. Surviving are three children, David Harvin and his wife, Sue, of Chapel Hill and Fayetteville, John Harvin and his wife, Judi, of Germany and Mary Harvin McDonald and her husband, Max, of Laurinburg; four grandchildren, Anna Reid Harvin and husband, Santiago Davila, Maggie Harvin, Emily McDonald and Will McDonald; a sister, Sarah Reid Keels; and many nieces and nephews. Dr. Harvin was born on Aug. 7, 1923, in Sumter, son of Harry L. and Sarah Reid Griffin Harvin. He grew up in Manning and graduated from Wofford College in 1943. He served in World War II from 1943-1945 in the 141st infantry 36th division of the Army, mostly in Italy. After the war, he completed his master of arts and doctor of philosophy in history at Duke University. Dr. Harvin taught at Columbia College from 1951-1960, then at St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg from 1960-1984.
