The Levi Pearson Scholarship Foundation has been committed to helping shape and mold young adults of Clarendon and surrounding counties into sound citizens, people of good character and high integrity by means of empowerment, mentorship and scholarship throughout the last 15 years, according to a news release. According to the foundation's website, family members and friends of Levi Pearson, the recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor and the catalyst of the Briggs v. Elliott case, established this scholarship. In 1947, Pearson, with his brother, Hammett, filed a lawsuit to secure a school bus for Black students to use, resulting in Levi Pearson v. Clarendon County Board of Education. Pearson and his wife had three children who walked nine miles to school. The Pearson family and other families in the Davis Station area collected roughly $900 to purchase a school bus to transport their children to and from school. The bus would occasionally break down, and the County Board of Education would not support maintenance or provide gas for the bus, although at the time, almost 74% of the county's school population was African American. As a result of the Pearson v. Clarendon County Board of Education, Briggs vs. Elliot and Brown v. Board of Education, the family and friends of the Pearson family decided to start awarding this scholarship. The foundation established the scholarship to assist young men and women of Clarendon, Sumter, Williamsburg and Lee counties with financial assistance to obtain a college education. In the last 15 years, the foundation has awarded more than 20 scholarships totaling roughly $35,000 of financial support, according to a release. Eligibility requirements are: 1. Must be a resident of Clarendon, Sumter, Lee or Williamsburg county; 2. Must be a graduating senior in good standing; 3. Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above; 4. Must have applied and or been accepted to a four-year college or university; and 5. Be an active member of a congregation (Bible-based). The foundation is now accepting applications that can be accessed at www.levipearsonscholarshipfund.org/how-to-apply through April 28.
