Jones Sr. MAYESVILLE -- Robert Edward "Peanut" Jones Sr., 86, husband of Thelma Spigner Jones for 65 years, went to his heavenly home on Monday, Feb. 27, 2012. Born Sept. 18, 1925, near Mayesville, he was a son of the late Robert L. and Leah Evans Jones. Mr. Jones was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a scout in the 26th Infantry Division, Co A, along with the 101st Field Artillery Battalion. He was in the Battle of the Bulge fighting from France, through Germany and Austria, and met the Russians in Czechoslovakia. He was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a farm machinery mechanic and part owner of McLaurin-Nettles, where he worked for many years and later worked in the farm equipment department of McLaughlin Ford. After his retirement, he worked for B.J. Metals. He was a Christian and member of Concord Presbyterian Church. He was a trustee for Brewington Presbyterian Church and Cemetery, until his health declined. Survivors besides his wife include a son, R.E. "Bobby" Jones Jr. (Shirley) of Sumter; a daughter, Linda Hall of the home; four grandchildren, Tracey Timmons (Bubby) of Sumter, Michelle Stamps (Mike) of Sumter, Craig Hall (Leighanna) of Mayesville and Melanie Williams (Jess) of Sumter; seven great-grandchildren, Spencer Stamps, Seth Stamps, Hannah Williams, Claire Williams, Zane Timmons, Ethan Davis and Taylor Johnson; two brothers, Calvin Jones (Doris) of Sumter and Harold "Monkey" Jones (Mildred) of Americus, Ga.; three sisters, Margaret "Toots" Harris of Augusta, Ga., Naomi Elmore (Alford) of Bishopville and Teresa Thigpen (Bobby) of Florence; a special sister-in-law, Ima Lee Jones of Sumter; and special niece, Loretta Prescott (Andy); and special nephew, Warren Jones. He was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Norwood Jones; a grandson, Clay Hodge; a son-in-law, Gerald Hodge; and two brothers-in-law, Charles "Chuck" Harris and J.B. Deas. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Jim Braswell and the Rev. Billy Griffith officiating. Burial will be in Brewington Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ronald "Bubba" Spigner, Robby Thigpen, Ricky Clark, David McCabe, Charlie Morse and Dave Harms. Honorary pallbearers will be Lawrence Morse, Edward McCabe, Tommy Evans, Mike Deas and the men of Concord Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home. Memorials may be made to the Brewington Cemetery Association General Fund, c/o Patti McElveen, 895 Pleasant Grove Road, Lynchburg, SC 29080 or the Amedisys Hospice, 2555-B Lin-Do Court, Sumter, SC 29150.
