“It broke my heart when I heard about Joy’s passing,” said Clarendon County Sheriff Keith Josey, “Without a doubt, Joy was one of the best people I have ever known.” ¶ Josey, who has known Mrs. Brewer and her family for his entire life, also worked with her when he served as Manning’s police chief. ¶ “She was very professional when handling her duties with the city,” Josey said. “She was friendly and always willing to help someone. She never met a stranger.” ¶ Josey also remembered Mrs. Brewer as always having a smile on her face. ¶ “It’s hard to believe people can truly be as nice as she was,” he said. “My wife, Dottie and I, dearly loved her and we will truly miss our dear friend.” ¶ Loretta Pollard, coordinator of Clarendon County Rolling Readers, said Mrs. Brewer lived true to her name. “She was such a ‘Joy,’” Pollard said Wednesday. “She was great with kids, and she loved doing for kids. She loved being a Rolling Reader, and we loved having her.” ¶ Manning Police Chief Randy Garrett first met Mrs. Brewer when he went to work for the city in 1977. ¶ “It was a pleasure to be around her,” Garrett said. “She always had a smile and something nice to say.” by Sharron Haley She was a volunteer for Rolling Readers, a member of United Daughters of the Confederacy; in 1981 she was the first volunteer for The Worldwide Research Program for Diabetes Control and Complications Trials.
